Fifth place finish for The Bahamas



On the final day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, The Bahamas was victorious in the Under-17 Boys 4x400 meters (m) relay. The team consisted of Michael Lockhart, Andre Wells, Ashley Riley and Stephen Newbold. That performance helped The Bahamas claim a fifth place finish at the biennial championships, winning 20 total medals - four gold, seven silver, and nine bronze.



The team won six medals on the final day to finish with the 20 medals. Jamaica won the championships with a total of 63 medals - 25 gold, 20 silver, and 18 bronze, Mexico was second with a total of 28 medals - 16 gold, eight silver, and four bronze, and Trinidad and Tobago finished in third with a total of 27 medals - 12 gold, six silver, and nine bronze. Puerto Rico was fourth with a total of 22 medals - nine gold, nine silver, and four bronze.

In the Under-17 Girls 4x400m, the team won the silver medal in a time of 3:51.27. This team had Marva Etienne running the lead-off leg, Shaunae Miller the second leg, Rachante Colebrooke on the third leg, and Talia Thompson anchored.

The Under-20 Girls 4x400m relay team placed third in a time of 3:38.81. Katrina Seymour led off with Devinn Cartwright running the second leg, Anthonique Strachan on the third leg and Rashan Brown anchored.
The final event of the championships was the Under-20 Boys 4x400m relay. At the CARIFTA Track and Field Championships, this was probably the closest race. It was not to be in Santo Domingo as the team of Ojay Ferguson, Delano Deveaux, Earl Rahming and Nejmi Burnside finished fourth in 3:12.98. Trinidad and Tobago upset Jamaica with a 3:08.19 clocking compared to 3:09.18 for Jamaica.
Also on the final day, Raymond Higgs won the silver medal in the Under-20 Boys High Jump with a clearance of 2.11m. Teammate Troy Bullard tied for the bronze medal with a jump of 2.08m.
Shaunae Miller added the bronze medal in the 200m to her collection when she clocked 24.51 seconds. Marva Etienne finished in fourth place in 24.83 seconds. Danielle Gibson also won a bronze medal, in the Heptathlon, scoring 3963 points.
In other performances on the final day of competition, Anthonique Strachan placed fourth in the Under-20 Girls 200m in 24.19 seconds while Rashan Brown finished eighth in 24.64 seconds. Julian Munroe was fifth in the Under-17 Boys 200m in 22.37 seconds while James Cash ran 24.44 seconds for eighth place. In the Under-17 Boys 100m Hurdles, Kirk Lewis did not finish. Aaron Wilmore placed eighth in the Under-20 Boys version of that event in 14.72 seconds.
In one of the last events of the evening, Hughnique Rolle was disqualified for pushing in the Girls 3,000m. The team filed a protest but the result of that protest was unavailable up to press time.
Talia Thompson finished seventh in the Under-17 Girls 800m in 2:29.68. Deshana Burnside ran 2:15.76 for seventh place in the Under-20 Girls division. Ashley Riley finished fourth in the Under-17 Boys 800m in 1:57.14 and Andre Colebrooke was sixth in 1:59.42. James Carey placed sixth in the Under-20 Boys in 1:56.48. Kyle Higgs finished seventh in the Under-17 Boys Shot Putt with a throw of 13.24m. In the Boys Under-20 Discuss, Elvardo Carey was 11th with a toss of 39.60m while Deangelo Nottage finished 13th with a toss of 37.58m.
The next Jr. CAC Championships is scheduled for El Salvador in 2012.
